چکیده
This morning’s debate is focused on the question of the large-scale homogeneity of the Universe. I shall present the affirmative position, that there is overwhelming evidence for large scale homogeneity on scales in excess of approximately 50h Mpc, with a fractal distribution of matter on smaller scales. My worthy opponent, Dr. Luciano Pietronero, will present the counter-argument, that the fractal distribution observed on smaller scales continues to the largest observed scales, and that there is no evidence for homogeneity on any scale. This is an important question, since the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric presumes large scale homogeneity and isotropy for the Universe. This is the simplest cosmological model, and it is a fair question to ask the degree to which it is supported by the observational evidence. We know that the galaxy distribution is far from homogeneous on small scales, and large-scale structure in the form of long filaments and chains extends to lengths in excess of 100h Mpc [1]. Redshift surveys often show structures nearly as large as the entire survey size; how confident can we be that homogeneity is a valid concept for the large-scale universe?

Homogeneous on Large Scales ?

We construct an effective action for gravity in which all homogeneous solutions are nonsingular1). In particular, there is neither a big bang nor a big crunch. The action is a higher derivative modification of Einstein’s theory constructed in analogy to how the action for point particle motion of particles in special relativity is obtained from Newtonian mechanics. ⋆ Invited talk at Internation...

The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which permeates the entire Universe, is the radiation left over from just 380,000 years after the Big Bang. On very large scales, the CMB radiation field is smooth and isotropic, but the existence of structure in the Universe – stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, . . . – suggests that the field should fluctuate on smaller scales. Recent observations, fr...

Quintessence – the energy density of a slowly evolving scalar field – may constitute a dynamical form of the homogeneous dark energy in the universe. We review the basic idea and indicate observational tests which may distinguish quintessence from a cosmological constant.

I critically discuss in a pedagogical and phenomenological way a few crucial tests challenging the recent claims by Pietronero and collaborators that there is no evidence from available galaxy catalogues that the Universe is actually homogeneous above a certain scale. In a series of papers, these authors assert that observations are consistent with a fractal distribution of objects extending to...
